Thirty Seconds to Mars rockets into Santa Barbara, L.A. this weekend May 12th, 2010
ZitatJared Leto promises ‘intimate,’ ‘bombastic’ shows Thirty Seconds To Mars wants to get intimate with you. Well, on stage at least.
That’s the point of their Into the Wild Tour, which stops at the Santa Barbara Bowl on Friday, May 14, and the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles on Saturday, May 15. Frontman Jared Leto promises “moments of intimacy” and “a lot of interactivity” at the shows.
Leto is the Los Angeles band’s singer and guitarist. He’s joined by his brother Shannon on drums and Tomo Milicevic on lead guitar.
The band, formed in 1998 by the Leto brothers, is on the road promoting its third album, “This Is War,” which was released in December.
As they were making the record, the band was slapped with a $30 million lawsuit in 2008 by their label, Virgin Records, which claimed the group had missed the deadline for completing the CD. After months of heated negotiations, the suit was settled and the band inked a new deal with the label.
Jared Leto recently talked to The Star about the current tour, lessons learned after the lawsuit and their desire to give fans that “intimate experience.”
It seems like you guys have been on a whirlwind tour so far. How’s it been going?
The tour has been incredible. It’s been the best tour we’ve ever done. We’ve been playing these legendary places in Europe and it’s been mind-blowing and humbling.
What can fans expect from the your show?
Chaos and some moments of intimacy. I will play some acoustic songs and some songs on the piano. There will be moments of madness and massive energy and spontaneity. It’s a pretty visceral experience and a lot of interactivity between the crowd and the band.

ZitatJared Leto Talks New Album, Label Troubles, and Recording for the Fans
It’s mere hours from the kick-off show for Thirty Seconds to Mars’s Into the Wild tour, and Jared Leto is not feeling so hot. From a hotel room in Las Vegas, the frontman quietly and scratchily warns, “My voice is a little worn out, so you’ll have to bear with me.” Insisting that the vocal trouble is nothing to worry about—“It’s just my throat, I’ll be fine,” he promises—Leto continues, recalling his whirlwind of a week. “We got back from Europe about four or five days ago and shot a video the second day we were home for our second single, “This Is War,” then we came out to Vegas yesterday and rehearsed all day, and today we begin our first U.S. tour in three years,” he states.
Despite his recent breakneck schedule, Leto’s enthusiasm is palpable. This leg of shows, which brings the band to the Santa Barbara Bowl Friday, May 14, is Thirty Seconds to Mars’s largest-scale outing yet, complete with epic stage sets, lighting, and a whole lot of audience participation. But perhaps most importantly, the tour marks the first time American audiences will bear witness to the fruits of Thirty Seconds to Mars’s recent labors. Coming off a lengthy lawsuit with their label, Virgin Records, the band (collectively Jared, brother/drummer Shannon Leto, and guitarist Tomislav Miličević) finally released their long-awaited third studio album, This Is War, in December of last year. The disk, chockful of bombastic guitar riffs, string orchestras, and hundred-person vocal collectives, is undeniably the band’s most ambitious to date, representing a shift in both style and sound for the trio.
