ZitatThe moment Jaco Van Dormael started shooting his third feature "Mr Nobody" in the summer of 2007, newspapers in his native Belgium began to predict glory at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. When the finished film was denied a place in the fest's competition this year, it was treated as a national tragedy.
ZitatBelgian helmer Jaco Van Dormael's "Mr. Nobody," which unspools in the Venice competition today, is about as big-budget as it gets for a European pic, especially one by an auteur.
The E37 million ($53 million) long-in-gestation English-language pic is set in the late 21st century. Jared Leto stars as a 120-year-old man who, on his deathbed, imagines alternate lives he could have led with three different women. It certainly constitutes a bold attempt to do something different in European cinema, both conceptually and from a production standpoint.
Jared Leto, how was working with Jaco Van Dormael?
Jared Leto: Jaco works in a special way, he’s able to connect deeply with people and transmit his passion to the whole cast. The greatest thing to see is how Jaco works with actors.
your characters are always particular and eccentric. Why did you choose Mr. Nobody and how did you get prepared to this role?
Jared Leto: I often change my physical aspect in my movies cause, as a person, i’m generally very confused. In this specific case the part chose me. It’s one of the best script I’ve ever read I was dying to be part of the project. Jaco is one of the best directors in the world and i was excited to take this chance and work with him.
Diane Kruger, what about your experience with Mr. Nobody?
Diane Kruger: I started to work on this movie when many things were done. I liked to be a young girl, to live emotions like the first kiss and the first love. Jaco can touch your heart. The movie is so complex, anything increases the characters life and the spectator is invited to reflect on the meaning of life. This one is the movie experience that touched me the most.
Sarah Polley, was this movie useful for your career as movie director?
Sarah Polley: Jaco is one of the best directors in the world and that’s one of the reason why i chose this movie . I learnt so much on the screen vision and on the harmony he created on the set.
Jared, how was working with three women that compete on your love in this continuum temporal journey?
Jared Leto: these three women are fantastic. It's probably the craziest fucking movie I did my entire life, it was a pleasure to work on a project like this.
Mr. Nobody had a very big and difficult production. What about rumors on a longer movie version than the one shown here in Venice?
Jaco Van Dormael: Now the movie is thick . there’s always a big fight between producers and it’s normal. Producers want money. Directors want art.
How did you work with Jaco on your character ?
Diane Kruger: I didn’t work a lot on it with Jaco, but we worked a lot on the relationship with Nemo Nobody. Jaco helped me to find emotions in my personal life experience.
Sarah Polley: Jaco loves his characters. My character lives in a bubble, it’s extremely in pain and Jaco helped me to find the right strings to hit to act my role.
This movie has different remarks to scientific theories, nine dimensions and Lace Theory. Did you use specific texts?
Jaco Van Dormael: I’m curious. This movie is linked to doubts and i have no certainty. I like two things in life: to be alive and to make movies and these two things are opposed cause in a movie everything counts and has a meaning but real life is full of black holes. Traditional narration tries to make things simple but I try to make complex movies… like life. This is what I tried to do with Mr. Nobody, i made a movie on the complexity of life. I think the Silver screen has more to discover about it, so I generally prefer those movies that make you ask questions not giving comforting answers.
ZitatMr. Nobody directed by Jaco Van Dormael wins the Biografilm Lancia Award, prize for the best biographical movie at Venice Film Festival, given by Biografilm Festival cooperating with sponsor Lancia. For the category " real film", the prize goes to the italian documentary film "Negli occhi" by Francesco Del Grosso and Daniele Anzellotti, with Giovanna Mezzogiorno .
Jaco van Dormael’s first film in 13 years betrays the formal rustiness and structural indiscipline that such a hiatus can cause in an artist, but there’s enough unique visual artistry and demented storytelling bravery on display here to make one glad he’s back.
Pitched as science-fiction, but really a whimsical, loosely motivated meditation on existence and chance, the film borrows the split-outcomes narrative device from Kieslowski’s “Blind Chance” (which also inspired the 1998 rom-com “Sliding Doors”) and sub-divides it several times over.
Also ...
